MOVED OVER PR NEWSWIRE AT 8:05 AM, EST, MONDAY, MARCH 11, 1991. Contact: John Cook Apple Computer, Inc. (408) 974-3145 Apple Reduces Prices on High-end and Mid-range Macintosh Personal Computers CUPERTINO, California--March 11, 1991--Apple Computer, Inc. announced today that it will decrease prices in the United States on its mid-range and high-end Apple Macintosh personal computers by up to 31 percent. Apple will lower prices on all models of the Macintosh IIfx, IIci and SE/30, effective immediately. These pricing actions are part of Apple's aggressive new market share strategy, and are in concert with today's price reductions of Apple LaserWriter IINT, IINTX and Personal LaserWriter NT printers. "Apple's market share strategy means providing better computers at aggressive price points in all parts of the product line," said Randy Battat, vice president, worldwide product marketing. Apple also announced it has changed the base memory of the Macintosh IIci and the Macintosh IIsi. In addition, the company announced the pricing and immediate availability of A/UX 2.0.1, its latest version of the UNIX operating system, which now supports the Macintosh IIsi. Mid-range & High-end Macintosh Computers The Macintosh IIfx is the most powerful and expandable model of the product line. It is the perfect choice for customers who run advanced applications for 3D design, image processing, financial modeling, or engineering analysis, in addition to their usual productivity applicationsPword processing, spreadsheets, and databases. For customers who want a system that can grow as their needs grow, Apple sees the Macintosh IIci as a great choice. It offers high performance, built-in color capability, and expandability in a system with a small footprint. Sales figures show that it is the system of choice for customers who use a range of business and productivity applications, including graphics, publishing, and computer-aided-design. The change in the Macintosh IIci main memory from 4 megabytes of RAM to 5 megabytes of RAM will provide an improvement in performance of up to 30 percent. And, for those customers demanding even more performance from their IIci, Apple announced it is now shipping its Macintosh IIci Cache Card. The $399 card provides 32 kilobytes of high speed static RAM. The card boosts system performance up to 30 percent on most application. The most affordable Macintosh II, the Macintosh IIsi, will come standard with 3 megabytes of main memory instead of 2 megabytes. The additional memory helps accommodate the requirements of some applications and ensures the best possible performance under System 7.0. Since its introduction last October, customers have made the Macintosh IIsi the workhorse of choice for business, education and government. And, for customers that value a small footprint, transportability and affordable pricing, Apple offers the Classic product line. The expandable Macintosh SE/30 is the highest performance member of the Classic line and appeals to customers ranging from university students to small business owners. A/UX 2.0.1 A/UX 2.0.1 provides customers of the Macintosh SE/30 and all Macintosh II class computers access to the familiar, intuitive Macintosh computer desktop and productivity applications, within the industry-standard UNIX environment. Because A/UX 2.0.1 now supports the low cost Macintosh IIsi and includes MacX 1.1 (an X Window display server), customers can have a lower cost UNIX system with access to X applications. Additionally, A/UX allows customers to have a single system on their desk to do all their daily work including mixing and matching UNIX, X Window System and Macintosh applications. They can also run MS-DOS applications using SoftPC from Insignia Software. LaserWriter Printers In a related move, Apple also announced today the repricing of its LaserWriter family. The entire Apple printer family now includes the ImageWriter II, StyleWriter, and Personal LaserWriter LS for individual printing capabilities; and the Personal LaserWriter NT, LaserWriter IINT, and LaserWriter IINTX for shared printing capabilities and PostScript functionality. Price reductions of up to 21 percent go into effect today. New Pricing & Configurations The new U.S. pricing structure will be effective immediately.
