[comp.sys.mac.announce] New Columbia AppleTalk Package [1].

djh@cs.mu.oz.au (David Hornsby) (03/17/91)

I am pleased to announce the availability of CAP 6.0.

This CAP distribution is an attempt to collect together all of the
patches available for CAP 5.0 and provides an opportunity to perform
some very necessary maintenance. The code contains original "official"
patches plus bug fixes and extra features contributed by *many* people.

CAP 6.0 does not (yet) include support for Phase 2 EtherTalk. It does,
however, include the following (and more):

All of the second Rutgers CAP distribution (ru-cap2),
AUFS/AFP 2.0 compatibility including short names for PCs,
Simple local customization for extra optional features,
Bundled UAB, with support for asynchronous appletalk,
Configure support for building IPTalk, UAB or EtherTalk versions,
Support for SunOS, NeXT, AIX, A/UX, IRIX, ULTRIX, XENIX [2] et. al.
More program contributions, with new Rutgers & Berkeley code.

CAP 6.0 is available via anonymous (binary) FTP from

	rutgers.EDU	[USA EAST, UTC-0500]	src/cap60.tar.Z
	mcsun.EU.NET	[W. Europe, UTC+0100]	network/appletalk/cap60.tar.Z
	munnari.OZ.AU	[Australia, UTC+1000]	mac/cap60.tar.Z

The compressed tar file is 1346001 bytes long. Please consider the other
users on these hosts and only transfer "after hours". If you have no FTP
access, send me an international reply-paid mailer with two FORMATTED blank
800k floppies (address below). I will return them with two StuffIt compressed
UNIX shar files containing the CAP distribution.

I would like to thank Rakesh Patel for his diligent work in checking for
compliance with the Rutgers distribution. Thanks also to the many people
who contributed bug fixes and new code for CAP and the beta testers (and
their unsuspecting users) who provided lots of valuable feedback.

Support for CAP is an ongoing, combined effort, by several people. Updates
will be regular (but not too frequent). There is no mailing list, details
of CAP changes will be posted to the newsgroup comp.protocols.appletalk.

Please send questions, bug reports, fixes or new feature patches to

	cap@munnari.OZ.AU

-----
[1]	CAP was written for BSD 4.2 UNIX and derivatives by Charlie C. Kim,
Bill Schilit and others at Columbia University. CAP implements
libraries containing portions of Apple Computer's AppleTalk protocol
stack (using IPTalk or EtherTalk for LAP delivery). In order to use
IPTalk with this package you may need an AppleTalk/Ethernet bridge.
CAP includes a number of core applications that can be used to print
to a LaserWriter, spool for a LaserWriter, and act as UNIX-based
AppleShare compatible (AFP 2.0) file server. CAP also includes a
number of utility programs and contributed software.

[2]	CAP contains support for SCO System V XENIX. It was not possible
to test this until recently and Murpy's Law has has been found to
apply. If you intend to use CAP 6.0 under XENIX, please email for
	details on getting it going.
