[comp.sys.mac.announce] Alpha 3.531 and future versions...

pete@titan.rice.edu (Louis Wu) (03/22/91)

Version 5.531 of Alpha, which fixes two very small bugs, is now available
on titan.rice.edu and should soon be available elsewhere as well.

This is the last version that I will be posting for quite some time. I have
taken the source off of the office mac and my own mac is half a world away
(I'm currently in France). I won't be able to work on it for the next
several months.

However, I will be spending July and August at JPL in LA, sans wife, so at
that time I expect that I'll be hacking fast and furious. Features that I'd
like to put in then:
    - A rewritten text-handling core that is faster and uses less memory.
    - A real macro language (probably lisp-like, but not supporting lists).
    - A graphical interface for at least the key-bindings.
    - 7.0 features if there is any use. For instance, I would love to
be able to get apple events from the Think C compiler on
compile-errors. Unfortunately, I doubt this will happen. Think seems
to have lost the drive to keep Think innovative. If they don't
support C++ in the next release, I might even splurge for MPW.
    - Requested features...

I will continue to collect bug reports on 3.531 (if there are any) and
incorporate fixes into the new version in July.

I'm thinking seriously of taking this version commercial in some way, but I
will continue to supply updates to people who have paid for copies before
then.
