The University of Utah, Center for Software Science is pleased to announce a backup solution for Macintosh computers networked with systems running UNIX. Many sites have both UNIX and Macintosh systems. Normally the UNIX systems already have appropriate backup media and automated backup procedures. If you have this capability for your UNIX systems but not for your Macintosh systems, then our solution may be right for you. Our utilities allow a UNIX host to backup/restore files from/to a Macintosh via TCP sockets. The Macintosh runs a small MultiFinder background task called Dump. Dump services the dump/restore requests initiated by UNIX client programs. The UNIX clients can then use the archival media of the UNIX host. Both full and incremental dumps are supported. The dump client program also synchronizes the Macintosh's clock to the clock on the UNIX host. Because UNIX backup systems vary widely, no one set of client programs can hope to satisfy all needs. Therefore, complete documentation for the dump protocol and sample UNIX client source code are provided. While these sample clients are sufficient for many common backup situations, sites with advanced needs can modify this code to match their local procedures. Non-UNIX sites may be able to use this solution if they have TCP/IP and are willing to write code to match the protocol. What you get: Dump, a MultiFinder background application. Dump CDev, a Control Panel document that handles configuration. UNIX source code for the client programs. UNIX shell scripts that manage the backups for simple situations. User, Installation, and Protocol documentation. System requirements: Any Macintosh capable of running System 6.0 or newer. The Macintosh must normally run MultiFinder. MacTCP Cost: For Educational Institutions: $200 for a site-wide license. (A site is a single campus.) Others: $250 for a site-wide license. (A site is a single location or mailing address.) Commercial inquiries welcome.
