SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES GREATWORKS, A FULL-FEATURED, LOW-COST INTEGRATED PROGRAM FOR MACINTOSH USERS Cupertino, Calif. -- June 24, 1991 -- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) today announced GreatWorks version 1.0, an integrated program for the Macintosh which includes eight full-featured application modules -- word processor, database, spreadsheet, chart, draw, paint, outline and communications. "The introduction of GreatWorks further illustrates Symantec's commitment to provide quality software for all levels of users on multiple platforms," said Gordon E. Eubanks, Jr., president and CEO. "With eight full-featured modules, GreatWorks is ideal for high-volume, low-cost Macintosh buyers." GreatWorks combines a breadth of functionality, a high level of integration among application modules, a consistent user interface, and extensive on-line help to get users productive quickly. Menu commands, tools and other common features look and work the same throughout the program. This similarity among modules allows users to perform a variety of tasks on the Macintosh while spending minimal time learning to use the software. Eight Modules in One ----- ------- -- --- Each of the eight GreatWorks modules was modeled after a popular stand-alone application for the Macintosh. GreatWorks requires a minimum of 1Mb or RAM to run, making it perfect for any systems from the Macintosh Classic on up. Each GreatWorks module is supported by common technologies which speed learning and simplify usage. Once a feature is learned, it is used the same way in every other module. Common technologies include standard text and graphics engines, a 100,000 word spell checker with custom dictionaries, a 660,000 synonym thesaurus, five units of measurement and Claris XTND file translators which allow users to read and write most popular Macintosh document types including AppleWorks, AppleWorks GS, Microsoft Works (Macintosh and PC), MacWrite, Word and Excel. GreatWorks supports Apple's System 7.0 operating system. It allows users to find answers to questions using Balloon Help, take advantage of True Type font technology, and utilize the new virtual memory and 32-bit addressing capabilities of System 7.0. "Symantec's approach fits extremely well with Apple's focus on providing high value at an affordable price," said Burt Cummings, director, higher education marketing, Apple Computer, inc. "GreatWorks is certain to fill the needs of faculty, students, and institutions in higher education." GreatWorks was developed by Leonard Development Group of Jacksonville, Fla.
