[alt.graphics.pixutils] Requesting help for selecting a Mac full Page-Scanner

lau@milton.u.washington.edu (Alexis Lau) (04/10/91)

Hi, Dear Netters,

Our group wants to buy a graphics-scanner for our Mac-cluster. Since this
is completely new to us and there are so many products on the market, we
would like to hear comments or suggestions from any fellow netter who had
experience with such devices (e.g. ThunderScan Plus $199, LightningScan 400
$385, Microtek MSF-300GS $1375, Microtek MSF-300ZS $1998, ... ... etc.).

For the present, our basic need is to
  1) scan figures or pictures from various sources (full-page, color or b/w);
  2) store them in the mac as graphic-objects to be modified by some drawing
       or painting programs like MacDraw or UltraPaint;
  3) incorporate them as pictures in manuscripts or class-notes written in
	word-processing programs like WriteNow or Word;

At present, we only have a b/w Laser Printer (LaserWriter II NTX).
Nevertheless, we may still be interested in getting a color scanner if color
graphics can be printed reasonable clear with the LP; and upgrading the LP is
still a possibility.

Any additional information (e.g. where we can find some review articles,
what memory requirement are we looking at ...etc) are appreciated, and all
comments are welcomed. Thanks in Advance.

First half answer:

  I use an HP ScanJet for B/W, OmniPage for OCR. Works adequately well.
I use (I'll check) for scanning graphics images, like it much better. It
only generates MacPaint or TIFF, but with pbm that's not a problem, so
it works for me.

  I'll try to get the color info, my color scanner is hooked to a PC
right now, but it has Mac interface and software. I'll check how well
the Mac software works.

  Note that I use both of these to get stuff in and then use the images
on a workstation, so I can't tell you much more than how well they grap
data. And if you get better answers I won't even bother typing in mine.
