[alt.graphics.pixutils] Mac PICT2 -> some intelligible format

ian@dgp.toronto.edu (Ian S. Small) (04/11/91)

I need to convert a few seconds of video footage grabbed on a Mac and
stored in PICT2 format (8 bit raster) to some format that I can work
with on an SGI Iris. Utilities I have tried so far on the Unix end
include SDSC imconv and PBM stuff. The former dumps core when I try
to use it to convert PICT2's to Iris RGB files, the latter doesn't
handle PICT2's. I have succeeded in making the PICT2 files into
TIFF files using PixelPaint Professional, but when I used SDSC to convert
the TIFF files, it dropped the colour map information (which is VITAL)
on the floor.

What I need is PICT2 -> some reasonable format, taking account
of the colour map information. I'd rather have the app run on the Unix
side, but Mac end stuff would be okay to. I'm prepared to handle
multi-step stuff as well (i.e. SDSC supposedly handles GIF, so
if I could get PICT2->GIF, that might be enough - of course, how
well SDSC handles GIF is unknown to me at this point).

Thanks in advance
ian

The Macintosh application GIFConverter will convert between PICT,
PICT2, TIFF, GIF, and a few other formats. It's shareware, and
available on Compuserve, America Online, etc.

I've written a Photoshop export plugin to save images into SGI Ipaste format.
It supports grayscale and RGB images, but not indexed color. If you were
to use it, you would have to convert the images to RGB first. This is
easy to do in Photoshop, but will make the images three times larger.

Mail me if you're interested.

In fact, the PBM+ utilities support reading MacIntosh PICT2.
I think you'll have to grab the beta-test version, though.

BTW, I posted a patch which would make the latest picttoppm
be able to handle 24 and 32 bit PICT2 images and while it
worked on a few test images someone sent me, I haven't heard
any reports claiming other successes or failures. So
what's the scoop? Has anyone actually applied the patch
and used it?

In anticipation of any "Gosh, I didn't see that but it sure sounds
useful" requests, you can get the latest version of picttoppm.c
from cs.ubc.ca in /src/picttoppm.c.
