[net.railroad] The Ace 3000

What's the status of the American Coal Enterprises high-tech steam
locomotive project? I haven't been reading Trains or Railfan as
much as I should be in the past few months and seem to have lost
touch. Can anyone supply some current info on the Ace?
Do people think it will be a success?

Nice to see some activity in this newsgroup.

Here's another potential topic for discussion. How is Amtrak long-haul
service these days? I spent a very enjoyable two weeks in May
of 1981 travelling from Detroit to Los Angeles (just had to see the
Railfair in Sacramento), to Seattle and back to Detroit. At the
time the service was very good, the meals were great and the trains
were on time (mostly). How is it now? Anyone who hasn't taken the
Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to San Francisco has really missed
a wonderful trip (or at least it was in 1981).

If memory serves, about 20 years ago, the UP (?) experimented with
diesel-hydraulics, road engines, made by Krauss-Maffei, German co.

Since these locos were designed for European systems, the cabs were
canted in toward to top, for tight clearances.

Does anybody know more?
