[comp.robotics] CM and MIT Mars "stuff"...

fmgst@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Filip Gieszczykiewicz) (05/31/90)

Greetings. I saw an article, a while back, that showed a
possible design of a Mars "rover".

It was supposed to be an axix with an instruments compartment
and 2 LARGE multi-compartment "baloon" wheels. To move, the
chambers in the wheels would inflate and deflate.

	1) Why is such design no researched (publicly, that is)
	2) Would it not be lighter and hence carry more instruments.
	3) baloon wheels would permit LARGE dimeter of wheel. This
could overcome depressions and hills on the surface.

	Anyone?

P.S. Has anyone seen any papers on the above?
