I frequently see references to guages like HOn2, HOn3, TTn3, etc. I gather that they refer to narrow guages somehow related to the obvious major guages. But how? What do the 2, 3, etc mean? -- Kenn (...decvax!goutal)

Remember that the scale is the ratio of distance on the model to distance on the prototype; gauge is the distance between rails of the track. In model railroading, we tend to use the terms interchangeably, but they are not. /***** uiucdcs:net.railroad / decvax!goutal / 7:11 pm Feb 7, 1984 */ I frequently see references to guages like HOn2, HOn3, TTn3, etc. I gather that they refer to narrow guages somehow related to the obvious major guages. For example, an HO model of the D&RGW would be described as HOn3. (The "n" is for "narrow".) Some folks model 2-foot guage lines in HO. N-scale track scales out to 2 1/2 feet in HO, which is a convenient compromise. Hence, HOn2-1/2. John Ewing
