[net.railroad] model narrow guages

goutal@decvax.UUCP (Kenneth G. "Kenn" Goutal) (02/07/84)

I frequently see references to guages like HOn2, HOn3, TTn3, etc.
I gather that they refer to narrow guages somehow related to the
obvious major guages. But how? What do the 2, 3, etc mean?

The number refers to scale feet: e.g., HOn3 is HO scale, narrow gauge track,
3 scale feet track gauge. Remember that the scale is the ratio of distance
on the model to distance on the prototype; gauge is the distance between
rails of the track. In model railroading, we tend to use the terms
interchangeably, but they are not.

The 2, 3, and so on refer to the track guage of the prototype being
modeled, expressed in feet. For example, an HO model of the D&RGW would
be described as HOn3. (The "n" is for "narrow".)

Some folks model 2-foot guage lines in HO. N-scale track scales out
to 2 1/2 feet in HO, which is a convenient compromise. Hence, HOn2-1/2.
