I am working on the initial stages of design for a robot programming language and am looking for a compiler target language. My research has made me aware of a standard being prepared by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) called IRDATA (Industrial Robot DATA). The idea is to have IRDATA form the interface between a standardized set of robot capabilities and the control software for specific robot controllers or other hardware. This sounds terrific, and since I have no interest in reinventing the wheel on low-level control issues, such a tool could save me considerable time and effort. The problem is that my best information on IRDATA comes from _Programming Languages for Industrial Robots_ by C. Blume and W. Jakob, 1986. It gives a short introduction extracted from a document called "VDI-Standard 2863, Part 1 (1963)". Does this mean the *year* 1963? That would seem odd in light of the fact that the book says that work started on IRDATA four years prior to the book's writing. So can anyone answer any of the following questions: 1. How old is IRDATA, and is it still viable? 2. What robot controllers are IRDATA drivers availiable for? Have any simulators been done for IRDATA code? 2. How can I get detailed specifications for IRDATA? (And does anyone have such information availiable for transmission over Internet?) 3. Can anyone provide me with the Internet or Bitnet addresses for Christian Blume or Wilfried Jakob (or other useful information about these authors)? 3. Are there any other similar efforts of which I should be aware? Thanks for any help you can provide. -- Troy Kammerdiener INTERNET & BITNET: kammerdi@rex.cs.tulane.edu Dept. of Computer Science USENET: [{ames, bionet}!]rex!kammerdi Tulane University New Orleans, LA 70118
