Concerning *BEHAVIOR BASED ROBOTICS*, Ron Arkin (among several others) has also demonstrated the utility of behavior based robotics for navigation. His approach to programming by behavior is quite different from Rod Brooks, and I think a lot can be learned by comparing and contrasting the two approaches. However, the main point is that the success of these independent researchers with programming by behavior is evidence that it is not a hack; it's worth spending the time on a literature search. There are a number of relevant papers available; the first one that comes to mind is Arkin's ``Motor Schema Based Navigation for a Mobile Robot: An Approach to Programming by Behavior'' in the procedings of 1987 IEEE Robotics and Automation Conference.
