******* In some old letters from my grandmother she refered to the C&A railroad tracks. The location would be in Central Illinois near Mason City, Ill. and San Jose, Ill. Her farm is between M.C. and S.J. Time period 30 to 50 years ago. The tracks in question ran generally north and south and a little to the north-east. Does anyone know which railroad this could be? Or if Grandma's memory is a little foggy can you think of something close (except C&O). I know that the GM&O ran through there. It seems it would be Chicago & something. Was there a Chicago & Alton. Post the answer. Thanks in advance.

Indeed, there was a Chicago and Alton Railroad. For a while it was owned by the B&O. I do not have any more information here in my office, but I might be able to dig something else up at home. Oh, yes, I seem to recall that they had a Division point in the town of Litchfield, Ill. (Somewhere I remember a photo of a roundhouse and a bunch of yard tracks). If I come up with anything interesting I will post it. Rich Strebendt ...!ihnp4!ihuxn!res

It was a busy railroad back then, and at one point did something really historical, which I think was conveying the first Pullman car in one of its trains. I have a further vague recollection that it was ultimately absorbed by the GM&O. John Ewing, Boston
