[comp.robotics] Need Info: carbon fiber & other lightweight composites

clint@meaddata.com (Clint Carter) (06/19/91)

I am looking for information on lightweight composite materials
such as carbon fiber, graphite, kevlar, etc.

Specifically, I would like:
+ Sources for purchasing such material in tubes, rods, sheets, etc.
+ Methods for tooling, joining, and working with these materials.
+ Methods for using carbon fiber at home (I picture something like
working with fiberglass -- lay fiber mesh on a form, etc.)
+ General characteristics of these materials (strength, weight,
    density, impact resistance, etc.)
+ Any experiences anyone has had working with this type of material.

I've tried to find carbon fiber in the local hobby shops and plastic
distributors, but had no luck.

Any info is greatly appreciated. I'll summarize e-mail responses.
Please post if you have something of general interest.

I'm not sure where you can get this material, but I had a problem
finding a material a few months ago...

I received help from something called the Thompson Register.
Apparently it is a list of *every*(?) manufacturing company
also cross-referenced by *everything*(?) they manufacture.

I found it at the local library in the reference section.
However I could not decipher my way through it.

Luckily I found a tear-out card where you could call the Thompson
Register and they will elp you. It only took a few minutes to get
the name and address of the company that manufactured my material.
(Sorbathane shock absorbing material by the way).

Then directory assistance found a number and the company refered
me to a regional distribution center that mail-ordered what I needed.

The number to the place is (212) 290-7262 and ask for the
information center, they were extremely helpful.

I'm not sure who funds this entity (for lack of a better word),
whether it's advertising to the companies listed, of government
or what, but I got the impression that it wasnt advertising
because everything was listed and cross-referenced.

Anyway, hope that helps, I know I'm keeping the number handy for
next time I'm looking fo a material.
