[net.railroad] AAR Car Types info wanted

tag@tty3b.UUCP ("Tom Gloger"3974 97320) (04/13/84)

Third time posting this; forgive me fellow employees.

Can anyone point me to a comrehensive list of AAR Mechanical
Car Designations? For example:

        X Box car
        XF Food-service box car
        H Hopper
        HMA Ore car
        LO Covered hopper

I've already seen the recent article in Model Railroader magazine,
and have the book "The Railroad: What It Is and What It Does"
(recommended reading!) so don't quote to me from those sources.
Thank you.

This came up once before, and I replied somewhat expansively
about an Official car registry, etc., and went so far to say
that it might be neat to have all this on a personal computer database
Will the person from DEC who called me, please call / message again.

I'm at home this time, and I've just gotten the bok I was referring
to. It's called "Official Railway Equyipment Register (pardon all my
typos, it's late)" published by the National Railway Publi-
cation Co.m, of Official Guide fame.

The Ckassification of CArs section lists about 120 (yes) types of cars,
using w and 3
useing 2 and 3 letter designations. Further, there is
an incredibly complex system of letter plus 3 number codes, which
provide such details are car length, door width, capacity in lbs., etc.
Fasciniting stuf, but too muchto post to the net.

The gentlemen from DEC suggested that he mught be in a position to
get a tape of all this info from the FRA. Let's all plst replies to
this message so he gets motibvated!!!

Oh, further details. Address of pblisher is/was 424 W. 33rs Street,
New York, N.Y. 10001. In 1976, one copy cost $12.50, with
subscription of $37.50 for quarterly copies. Hell of a book.

P. S. I'm doing this note from home on a personal
computer using a "modem" program that isn't giving me full support of
editing and cursor keys. Sorry if this is a bit hard to read. Please
call me. I enjoy talking to other fans .
