[comp.sys.mac.comm] Epic 2400 External Modem Woes

bmwu@athena.mit.edu (Benson M. Wu) (06/06/90)

The cover fo the transformer says it outputs 9V AC & 500 mA. I was kind of surprised
by this label since most transformers for Walkmans put out DC current. Is this a
a typo? I have another transformer which puts out 9V DC and 300 mA. I try to hook
it up with the Epic modem; some of the LED light lit up, but I could not access
the modem via the communication software I usually use. does this mean the modem is
broken or does this mean my new power supply did not provide enough juice (current)?

The coveer of the transformer says it is made by a Company called Condor and gives
a telephone number which begins with area code 408. I looked it up; it's a San
Jose area code. Does anybody have any experience with this company? Do they have
an outlet in the Boston area? I am going to call them up later this afternoon, but
any netter's response will be appreciated.

My friend's modem is made by Epic. She could not find the original packaging box
or the manual. Unfortunately, she bought it through a mail order company and she
does not remember where she bought it from either. does anybody known where this
company is? I would appreciate a telephone number of this company. She bought
this modem about 2-3 years ago. I hope the company is still in existence.

lastly, if this modem is broken and I have to buy her a new modem, I would like
to get a fax/modem. I would like to hear from people who have such a gadget?
I would appreciate any tip on prices, quality, performance, special software needed
to drive the fax/modem. I also wonder how it would work with call waiting, telephone
answering machines. Logistically, I wasn't sure how to reconcile a fax machine
and an answering machine on the same telephone line.

Thanks for all the help. Please e-mail me at bmwu2athena.mit.edu.
