[comp.sys.mac.comm] 9600 bps modem advice

alms@cambridge.apple.com (Andrew L. M. Shalit) (06/09/90)

I'm looking for a good deal on a 9600 bps modem. It needs
to work with a Hayes Smartmodem 9600, which I believe means
it needs to be V.32 compatible.

So far I've only looked as far as MacConnection. They have the
Hayes for $759. I'm wondering if I might do better than this
by going with another brand or another retailer.

Please e-mail responses. I'll post a summary if people desire.

I don't think so. The Hayes modems weren't V.32 until very recently, so I
think you are stuck with the Hayes. If you want to also talk with the rest
of the world, I think Hayes makes a modem that knows V.32 and their old
protocol. But it will be mucho $$$$.

If you look in computer shopper, you should be able to find V.32 modems
for about $600-$700.

Anyone know whatever happened to that chip set (2 chips I think) that would
put a 9600 bps modem on 2 chips and cause a large price reduction similar
to the one a ways back on 2400 bps modems? I think it was mentioned in
a MacUser or MacWorld modem article.
