[comp.sys.mac.comm] Responses to AppleTalk/SLIP query

blm@6sceng.UUCP (Brian Matthews) (07/06/90)

I've attached a summary of the responses to my query about AppleTalk
and SLIP. Due to time constraints I haven't had a chance to try any
of these yet, and due to changing hardware configurations, I may never,
but some other people indicated they were interested in the information,
so this may help someone else. Thanks to everyone who responded.

From moorej@cpsin.cps.msu.edu (Jeff Moore):

|if you need a copy of the Ka9Q program, I THINK (?) that it is on
|nis.nsf.net (anonymous ftp).

From barnett@unclejack.crd.ge.com (Bruce Barnett):

|Intercon's TCP/Connect supports telnet over slip. It costs $500.
|Don't know of a public domain package.

From: djh@munnari.OZ.AU (David Hornsby)

|I have modified the Async DA from Dartmouth to be a Network adev (IE: uses
|the LAP manager to select an alternate appletalk driver). I have also
|written the UNIX code to go on the other end. It supports speeds 1200
|to 9600 (300 & 19200 also but untried).
|
|Unfortunately, the way things work with KIP/CAP etc. you need another
|gateway to do some of the processing. This stuff currently works fine with
|a Multigate and I am in the midst of some code for UAB support on a SUN.
|
|You can collect what exists to date via anonymous ftp from munnari.OZ.AU as
|
| multigate/async.atalk.1.2.shar.Z
|
|Bugs:
|	1. version 1.2 bombs sometimes if you are on a Mac Plus/SE at 2400
| AND you have a hard disc. This is an interrupt problem that
| has already been fixed in 1.3.
|	2. killing the control panel behind the login window leaves an
| orphaned window with no storage.
|	3. the adev is not compatible with version 2 of the Network cdev.
|
|Version 1.3 was expected mid June but I am going on leave shortly. This
|probably means nothing until about August. When it arrives I expect to have
|UAB support and the above bugs fixed.

From hv@uwasa.fi, hv@flame.uwasa.fi or hv@funic.funet.fi (Harri Valkama):

|Sliptelnet does exist. You can find it available for anonymous ftp at
|funic.funet.fi (128.214.6.100). It is located in pub/mac/comm

From rick@intercon.com (Rick Kaseguma):

|You might want to try TCP/Connect II from Intercon Systems. It supports
|telnet (VT100-VT241, IBM TN3270, Tektronics emulations), ftp, news reading
|(with an nntp server), mail (using smtp with a pop3 server), and other fun
|stuff, all with a nice Macintosh interface. It can use either MacTCP
|(included), or its own TCP/IP software, which works correctly over Ethernet,
|LocalTalk, or SLIP (with the appropriate SLIP server).
|
|Disclaimer: I'm baised toward the program, but it's still nice...

From dbw@megatek (David B. Wollner):

|KA9Q doesn't require ethernet. Any SL/IP implementation is
|designed to run over a serial connection. I connected a mac
|to a sun over the serial ports using KA9Q. I used the Toronto
|implementation of SL/IP on the sun side, although I have heard
|that other implementations are better to use currently.

From russotto@eng.umd.edu (Matthew T. Russotto):

|There used to be (and possibly still is) a version of NCSA telnet that
|works with SLIP at dustbin.cisco.com. You need a config file and other
|stuff from standard NCSA telnet. (Modify the hardware setting to SLIP9600
|or SLIP<whatever your baudrate is>)
