[comp.sys.mac.comm] zmodem doesn't work

jwright@cfht.hawaii.edu (Jim Wright) (07/19/90)

Setup:
Mac IIcx, system 6.0.4, ZTerm 0.85 or 0.8
HP9000/350, HP/UX 7.0, rz v1.14 and sz v1.23
Amiga with many and varied comm programs
ibmpc with many and varied comm programs

rz/sz both work when talking to an Amiga or an ibmpc. The Mac won't
talk to anyone. I've tried all sorts of settings, both on the Mac and
on the Unix machine, with no luck. I've tried hardwired connections
and modem dialup. I'm about ready to try throwing the Mac out the
window.

What's the trick?

Try a newer version of rz/sz. It has been up in the v3.x range for the
past year or two. The latest release came out 2/2/90 and includes 3.07
of sz. You should be able to find it on GEnie, CIS, or the landline BBS
mentioned in the sig below. Not sure if sumex has it posted yet or not...

Works fine with me (zterm & sz 3.03), b/n a SE and a HP 9000/830
running hp-ux 3.1.

Maybe you need a fresher version of rz/sz ?

The trick was that the zmodem I got from uunet.uu.net was quite old, while
the zmodem on sumex-aim.stanford.edu is not so old. Using sz v3.03 and
rz v3.00 all now seems to be OK. Thanks to Barry Brown <bebrown@UCSD.EDU>
for pointing this out.

I have zterm .85 and rz ver 3.00, sz ver 3.03.
Sending files from the Ultrix host works fine. (It's the fastest protocol
yet!). Receiving files from the Macintosh using rz does not work. ZTerm keeps
trying to send, and returns with error message "ZRPOS = zero" or something
similar. Does anyone know why?

I tried looking today at sumex-aim.stanford's archive. They still have the
older version of rzsz (3.00).

The trick might be to install more current versions of
sz & rz. Both the listed versions above I believe are
very old releases. Current versions I think are over 3.0?
there abouts...you might look for sources for the later
versions to install on your system.
