Our network today consists of one localtalk segment (with an AppleShare server and a LWIINTX), and a FastPath 4 to our ethernet (with aufs and lwsrv for one LaserWriter). Now we are adding another localtalk segment, of about 10 users. The users on the new segment use the resources on the first segment, and need IP routing for telnet etc. As all traffic on the segment is likely to go through the bridge to the rest of the network, special consideration must be given the choice of the bridge. The problem is that there are very few multi-segment AppleTalk networks installed in Sweden, and those that exist mainly use FastPaths and ethernet backbones. OK, I am satisfied with our FP 4, but I think it is a bit on the expensive side considering for example the Shiva EtherGate. We might even get by with a localtalk-localtalk bridge such as the Hayes InterBridge or the Shiva NetBridge. So now for the questions: Would a Hayes InterBridge or Shiva NetBridge have the throughput we need ? Does the EtherGate co-exist well with a FastPath ? Does the EtherGate do ip-routing, or is it enough that our tcp clients can access the FastPath through the EthetGate ? Does the EtherGate boot from atalkad ? Is the EtherGate stable ? How does it stand up to the FastPath, performance-wise ? A lot of questions, I know, but I really would appreciate if you, humble reader, would give me your opinions on the subject. advTHANKSance / anderss@uplog.se -- Real life: Anders Sjolund Email: anderss@uplog.se Snail mail: Telesoft Uppsala AB Phone: +46 18 189409 Box 1218 Fax: +46 18 132039 S - 751 42 Uppsala, Sweden
