[comp.sys.mac.comm] TCP/IP connection tool

robin@csuchico.edu (Robin Goldstone) (08/07/90)

The September 1990 Issue of MacUser (p. 296) discusses the Communications
Toolbox and the eventual availability of a TCP/IP tool. The article
describes the basic set of tools that Apple will release with Sys 7 then
states "Connection tools planned for future release will support ... TCP/IP
..." Does this imply that Apple will be developing and releasing this
tool? Is anyone else working on a TCP/IP connection tool? Can anyone
offer a guess as to when this tool may be available? It sure would be
nice to be able to use VersaTerm to do all my comm stuff, both serial and
ethernet-based...

Network Gurus:
	I've got a 5Meg SE/30 with a NuvoLink SC (SCSI <-> Ethernet
connector) and a 2 page display driven through the SE/30's internal
slot. When I run NCSA Telnet 2.3 using its own TCP code, everything
is fine (which implies that the NuvoLink SC and the network are
working). However, when I run MacX or the NCSA/BYU Telnet package
(both of which use MacTCP and the communications toolbox), I can't get
through to the network. MacX gives the error "MacTCP Connection Tool
Error when initializing a connection: unknown error code -344" and
BYU/NCSA just quits. Does anyone have ideas about how to get around
this problem? I need to get MacX running on this machine ASAP.

Thanks,
Steve

Apple has assured me that they are *not* developing a TCP/IP tool for
CTB. Apple has developed a simple MacTCP connection tool for use with
MacX, but it won't help you with terminal emulation because it doesn't
support Telnet. Pacer has developed a MacTCP Telnet tool that will be
included with their new terminal emulation product. Currently, there
are no plans to market the tool seperately. Other TCP/IP tools are
available from Advanced Software Concepts in France, and I thought that
someone at Intercon Systems mentioned that they were developing a tool
for TCP. (I could be mistaken)

I have InterCon TCP/Connect II software on my MAC. It provides IBM, DEC
and Tektronix terminal emulation. I have been connected to as many as 10
different computers at the same time, cutting and pasting between sessions
and with each session having it's own customization. All of mail from VAXes
Sun's and IBM Profs is routed to my TCP/Connect II. I also use it to connect
the TCP/IP News.
