[comp.sys.mac.comm] SUMMARY - NCSA Telnet

ncliffe@axion.bt.co.uk (Nigel Cliffe) (08/24/90)

Thanks to the many people who sent me information about
NCSA Telnet 2.3, and where to get it from, I now have a
copy of the binary for the Mac, and will be attempting to
retreive the source in the near future.

Below is an edited selection of the replies I received.
If someone sent the same information as another, I have only
included the first to arrive, apologies if you feel left out, your assistance
was appreciated. I have tried to send acknowledgements to all those who
sent me information, if you didn't get one, sorry.

Nigel Cliffe.

Omar Souka:
I think the latest version is 2.3. It's free and you can anonymous FTP
it from sumex (36.44.0.6).

Kurt W. Hirchert:
The current version of NCSA Telnet is 2.3. Version 2.4 will probably be out
later this year. There are at least three ways to get it:

1. If you are connected to the Internet, you can get it via anonymous FTP from
the machine known as ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu (IP address=128.174.20.50).

2. Call NCSA at (217)244-0072 and request that we send you a current copy of
our Technical Resources Catalog. You can order NCSA Telnet from the
catalog. I believe the current price is $30 for media containing the
software and $10 for the printed manual. [If you're really into it, you
can also order the source code and developer's guide.]

3. I believe we still are running an e-mail based server. Send e-mail to
archive-server@ncsa.uiuc.edu. Your message should consist of the word
help. If things work properly, you will receive a return message
explaining how to use the server. We limit the amount of e-mail the
server produces each day to protect our net-neighbors from being overrun,
so this process can be very slow, and there is often a delay before new
products or versions are available this way, so I would recommend that you
use this only if you can't use one of the other alternatives.

NCSA Telnet is in the public domain, so if you can find someone else who has
already obtained NCSA Telnet through one of the above methods, it is entirely
appropriate to copy it rather than reproducing those steps yourself.

Brian Zook:
NCSA Telnet is produced by NCSA as a public domain program. According to the
"About..." box, the address is:
                NCSA Software Development
                152 Computing Applications Bldg.
                605 E. Springfield Ave.
                Champaign, Illinois 61820
                telbug@ncsa.uiuc.edu

David V. Baker:
The ftp address for NCSA is ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu (128.174.20.50) and the
stuff you want is in NCSA_Telnet/Mac/tel2.3.src.sithqx and possibly
NCSA_Telnet/Mac/Telnet2.4Beta/{telnet2.4B.sit.hqx,telnet24B.src.sit.hqx}

That is the source for the 2.3 version and the executable and source
for the new 2.4 Beta version.
