I am currently encountering a very strange problem over a LocalTalk setup that we have here in the Dept. Our LocalTalk is split up into 4 sections now (pending on a Mulitgate Appletalk/IP gateway) and so I have connected up the 4 sections into 2 separate nets y bridging them with a twisted pair loop. That works ok. We have two laser printers and i have one laser sitting on each net so people can at least print for now. However the strange thing is that on one of the nets printing is incredibly slow! It may take up to 10 minutes for a print job to get through. I have switched the networks around and the same behaviour takes place indicating that the segment with the laser printer on it is the one at fault. What my question is what could possibly be causing such a slowdown? Would faulty wiring cause some sort of 'storm' on the net? The strange thing is that the printers can be 'seen' by the AppleTalk hosts but only the comms is really slow... and the load is negligable ie one other Mac is on the net with laser printer and isnt doing much. My second question is: Are there any tools around for someone managing an AppleTalk network so that one can monitor at least reachability of a particular host? Moving a mac around to see if it can see a laser printer is truly tedious! Even an AppleTalk 'ping' will do... Please answer via email and I'll summarise the responses, Thanx for your time, Steve ................................................................................
