[comp.sys.mac.comm] NCSA Telnet, The Telebridge

We have just begun using a Shiva Telebridge with a Telebit T1500 modem. The
application is mostly NCSA Telenet from people's homes. The question is one
of the communication protocol that best serves the user.

It appears that V.42 with LAP works great for things like FTP, but between
the compression and the protocol itself (I'm told that it is actually a
half-duplex protocol with line turnaround -- is this true?), character echo
time for the shell is terrible. In fact, a ping to the Mac (with MacTCP) from
one of the unix boxes takes 350ms for the round trip! Interactive response
time seems to be significantly worse then that.

V.32 with MNP (or without MNP!) may be a better choice -- but I hate to
experiment and end up with a sub-optimal solution. I would like to optimize
for the smoothness of response for interactive shell/vi users.

Does anyone know the 'best' way to hook up all of these gizmos?

Please respond via mail -- and I'll summarize the responses.

Thank you,
