[comp.sys.mac.comm] File transfers/UUPC on 7-bit lines

c3ar@zaphod.uchicago.edu (Walter C3arlip) (09/16/90)

Help!
My mac is connected to our UNIX mainframe via some sort of terminal
concentrator, and none of the communication methods for file transfers
and email that I have used successfully on direct connections work.

(1) Zterm fails (crc errors)
(2) Binary Kermit fails
(3) Macput, macget, macbput, and other forms of xmodem fail
(4) UUPC fails (with the error message "bad header")

My *conjecture* is that the failure is due to some 7-bit connection
somewhere along the way. Another possible problem are the irritating
^S/^Q Xoff/Xon characters that these lines seem to have. Is this a good
guess? Can anyone point me to utilities that *will* work in this environment?

Any suggestions greatfully appreciated. Thanks!

MacUUPC is only capable of handling 8 bit wide data paths (as I believe
is the PC version also). This is a limitation of UUPC. Look toward
getting yourself set up with a nicer uucico engine. For awhile I
was running SoftPC and the uucico engine that came with the PC BBS
system called Waffle (didn't run the BBS at all, just the protocol
handler, and used QUED/M scripts to hand craft spool files).

uAccess (was aka uMail), soon to be released, works just fine with
my 7 bit mail server.
