[comp.sys.mac.comm] Apollo-Mac file xfer advice sought...

carlton@apollo.HP.COM (Carlton B. Hommel) (10/10/90)

Here is the setup I have used at both sr10.2 and sr10.3. It involves
zmodem transfers at 19.2. As this usually runs at 80-95% efficiency,
the transfer rate is above 1600 chars/sec. Kermit, eat your heart out...

On the Apollo side:
1. Install sz/rz. It is available from sumex.stanford.edu as
/info-mac/unix/zmodem-part[123].shar. Make sure that the binaries are
resident on the node you are transferring to.
2. Modify the tty01 line of /etc/ttys to say the following:
    tty01 "/etc/getty 19200-baud" vt100 on secure
3. Send the init process a HANGUP signal, to fire up the getty. This
will be done automatically every time you reboot.

On the Mac side:
1. Install zmodem 0.85. It is available from sumex.stanford.edu as
/info-mac/comm/zterm-085.hqx. Pay the $30 shareware fee.
2. Doubleclick on the Zterm icon. Set the baud rate to 19.2. Fiddle
with the other settings to your liking. In particular, set the Zmodem
Params to Unix, rather than Opus.

You should now see the standard login banner. Well, at least, you
should. What I see is some 8-bit garbage coming from getty. Just type
in your username, and getty will hand off control to login, which works
just fine.

Does it work? Well, I'm using typing this in from home, at 9600baud.
I can download the latest stuff from the sumex archives, or
comp.binaries.mac at about 900 cps.

To make things go faster, compile a copy of mcvert, available from
sumex as /info-mac/unix/mcvert-15.shar. This excellent program will take
a bunch of *.hqx files, and make them into a MacBinary II file, with a
*.bin extension. The sz, rz, and zterm programs magically know what to
do .bin files. The GateKeeper anti-viral program needs to be told that
zterm should have File(other) permissions.

If you are using an Ethernet, in addition to the Apollo Token Ring
network, you can buy an Ethernet card for a Mac II or Mac SE/30, and
use the NCSA Telnet software package to use ftp for file transfer. I
haven't done this yet.

Hope this helps,
Carl Hommel
