[comp.sys.mac.comm] Performance info reqd on MacOS X servers on pluses

cosc038@canterbury.ac.nz (10/10/90)

We are interested in getting some more information on X server
implementations that run under MacOS (I've read the MacOS X server
section of the comp.windows.x FAQ). We have the following
configuration:

Mac pluses (some 2.5Mb, some 1Mb; some have hard disc, others do not
hard discs, but do have access to a file server) connected via
Localtalk to an ethernet gateway, giving access to several Suns and
other machines on the ethernet.

Currently NCSA Telnet is used to provide access to the Suns from the
Macs. We are interested in investigating the possibility of running X
on the Mac pluses. We are aware of the existence of MacX and eXodus,
and would be interested in hearing of experiences of these and other
MacOS X servers in environments similar to ours. It seems that eXodus
will run on 1 Mb plusses, and MacX requires at least 2 Mb. We are
interested in finding answers to the following questions:

- are there MacOS X servers that can operate over localtalk to an ethernet
bridge?

- is X server performance acceptable for:
2.5 Mb Pluses with and without a hard disc
1 Mb Pluses with and without a hard disc

- how many Macs running X servers can the bandwidth of Localtalk
support?

Sorry if these topics have been thrashed to death in this group, but
I'm not a regular reader. Please email replies and I will post a
summary.
