[comp.sys.mac.comm] Mac Access to TCP/IP

jay@axiom.maths.uq.oz.au (Joseph Young) (10/12/90)

I'm faced with the following configuration:

          +-----+ +-----+
          ! Mac ! ! IBM !
          +--+--+ ! PCs !
             ! +--------+ +--+--+
   Novell Trunk - LocalTalk ! Novell ! Novell Trunk - Ethernet !
-------------+----------------+ File   +----------+-----------------+--->
                              ! Server ! !
                              +--------+ !
                             (NetWare 2.15) +--+---+
                                               !Bridge!(Brand: Wellfleet)
                                               !Router!
                                               +--+---+
Ethernet to remote hosts ! (TCP/IP)
           ---------------------------------------+-----------------------

Question: How can I get the Macintoshes on the Novell LocalTalk trunk talking
to the remote hosts on the Ethernet running TCP/IP. The type of
services I'm interested in are Telnet, FTP and mail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .. I'm fairly new at this type of thing.

You are going to have to deal with Novell on this one. I haven't
kept up with Netware for a while, but I believe Netware 386 has
(or is supposed to have) support for IP including dynamic IP
address assigment. That should get you FTP and Telnet. The mail
issue depends on what kind of mail you want to use. SMTP, CC-Mail,
etc.

The only way to get your Macs talking to TCP/IP hosts on Ethernet is to
add an IP bridge, such as a FastPath, between your LocalTalk and the
Ethernet with the TCP/IP hosts. Novell NetWare does not pass TCP/IP
packets.

A number of departments have had this same problem here. They are told
that the NetWare server will connect them to "the network" and are
disappointed when they can't use any TCP/IP services. Does anybody know if
Novell will ever provide this kind of service and, if so, when?
