[comp.sys.mac.comm] Difference between v.32 and v.42? Please?

afton@pawl.rpi.edu (Alan S. Blue) (10/24/90)

First off, this is a guest account so please mail to my address below. Thanks.

Now, I have been looking at buying a modem for my MacIIsi, and here's what I've
come up with as the 'best' buys:

1) Microcom MacModem v.32 9600 MNP9 (!?)
Bundled with Carbon Copy Mac and a Wake-up Cable, and QuickLinkII
	$675
2) Prometheus ProModem 9600M v.42 MNP5 / 9600 FAX
	With MAcKnowledge, Maxfax and cables.
	$699
3) Practical Peripherals 9600S v.42 MNP5
	No cables, etc.
	$545
4) Of course...
   Hayes 9600 V SuperModem v.32
	$695
5) And...
    Hayes 9600 ULTRA v.42
	$795
No cables on either Hayes. My question: What would be your pick as far as
reliability of company, price, performance, etc. AND what exactly is the
difference between v.32 and v.42? Is it worth the extra money in most cases?
No, a lower baud modem isn't really feasible because the modem on the SUN at
work is 9600, and I need all the productivity I can get! Speaking ofwhich..
anyone have nay experience with MacLayers? I need some help there too...

Thanks in advance...
