I have several questions about Faxmodems and I hope that the combined resources of this network will be able to provide me with an answer. Looking at the variety of different FAXmodems available and their different features, my question concerns which are the best out there in terms of useability and design. I am looking for a FAXmodem that is capable of automatically switching to modem or FAX status upon leaving or entering the specific application. Thus if I run Zterm, it should automatically go out of FAX mode if I have backFAX or InterFAX running in the background. It should nnot require me to manually disable the FAX in order to telecom. The next question concerns these features as well: I have a strong suspicion that these very features are more a matter of what software is being used, than the actual hardware of the FAXmodem. Is that assumption correct? Thus can I basically buy and 24/96 FAXmodem on the market, and simply get a copy of the 'good' background software to achieve the best results. Can I use ANY external FAXmodem with Macintosh software? There are quite some good priced FAXmodems in most PC mags, and if possible I would be interested to pick one of those up. The last query concersn one of those ominous 'one box does it all for your phoneline' switch boxes that let you use one line for voice, FAX and modem. The majority I have seen so far let you switch FAX and voice, while requiring the entering of a special code for modem access (pretty useless really). My question: Is there a product out there that will automatically switch to modem upon recognizng the proper tones? I'm just looking for something that can completely automate the switching process.
