>could someone tell me what 'dove' modems are? & how are they different >from regular modems? Dove modems are a brand (from Dove Inc.) which can have fax/modem capability. Basically, they're 2400 baud modems, with 9600 baud send/receive fax abilities. Comes with a bunch o' INITs that let you do all of this in the background; you fax by Chooser-ing the Dovefax as your printer, from any program. (They also work with IBMs, I'm told.) $279 from MacWarehouse (free plug). I don't have one, but for more information, you can find someone who uses America OnLine; Dove maintains a bulletin board listing there. -- Jeff Porten, Annenberg School for Communication, UPenn (sjporte@asc.upenn.edu)

It's possible the original poster was referring to a DOV (Data Over Voice) modem, which does just what the name says. I use one regularly at 9600 baud on my single phone line, and can use the phone for standard conversations at the same time. You need one at each end of the line, and they're apparently only useful over short distances. I suppose that means it can't take international calls... especially with AT&T quality over the Pacific... >Charles Allen Internet: cca@physics.purdue.edu >Department of Physics nvi@mace.cc.purdue.edu >Purdue University HEPnet: purdnu::allen, fnal::cca >West Lafayette, IN 47907 talknet: 317/494-9776 thanx ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- h i r o s h i h o w e l l hh0x@andrew.cmu.edu 1000 morewood ave., #3106 ( 412 ) CMU - GILA pittsburgh pa 15213 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
