(301)946-5032 (SHameless Plug ;-)) Since you're in the DC area, it may 
be worth a call. They have many HST/DS  modems which support V.32 and 
V.42bis protocols.
 
In answer to other part of your post, I'm entering this message on a 
9600 baud modem and a Mac IIcx, so it definitely is possible to use a 
high speed modem on a Mac :)
