Does anybody know if there exists a Kermit file transfer tool for the
Communications ToolBox?

A short while ago I posted a request for a Kermit file transfer tool for
the Communications ToolBox. I received the following reply from Geoff
Pascoe at Apple's Advanced Technology Group. He asked me to post this to
the net for him.

Subject: Kermit Tool for CTB

David,

I found some a Kermit tool for CTB. Here's the info-

Macintosh Communications Toolbox (CTB) File Transfer Tools:

% ZMODEM File Transfer Tool List: $ 55.00

% ZMODEM / Kermit File Transfer Tool Package List: $ 85.00

% Annual Developer VAR License (per File Transfer Tool) $4,800.00

       - Available only to Apple approved developers.

       - Allows non-exclusive value added distribution for one year.

       - Must be bundled with developer created software having a list
         price of $100 minimum.

% Corporate Site License (per File Transfer Tool) Unit Fee: $ 25.00
                                             Unlimited Use Fee: $3,500.00

       - A site is generally defined to cover the following:

                            the named university/college campus.

K-12: One or more schools that make up a single school district.

Business: All of a division's locations with a 25-mile radius.

Government: All of an agency's/department's locations with a
25-mile

Kermit will be available in early early 1991 (December 1990 is Beta Testing
Phase). ZModem tool will be available in March 1991.

(Text from article describing ZModem and Kermit File Transfer Protocol
CTB Tools Deleted--ZModem or Kermit = $55, both together = $85)

Will this be the price that end users are going to be paying for these CTB
tools? If this is the trend, a full-featured CTB telecomm program will
be darn expensive.....

(Please correct me if I am wrong)

The trend here, by those I have talked with, is to rely heavily on
Apple's tools, and to bundle your own tools into any product developed.
This should settle into a groups of entities writing tools and selling
them to those who sell you your software. This way, the large upfront
purchase will lower the end cost of these tools to you. Unfortunately,
for some time, what you want will prove somewhat expensive.

Also, the reduced development effort should allow vendors to sell cheaper
telecommunications programs, or spend the traditional development
time for XMODEM and ZMODEM etc in other enhancements that you might
otherwise not see.

In theory, money-wise, it should be a wash, and there should be much
more flexibility and variety in communications. Lets hope it works
out this way!
