[comp.sys.mac.comm] CompuServe & America On-Line

careyk@uhccux.uhcc.Hawaii.Edu (Carey Kinoshita) (12/20/90)

I was wondering if there are any 24 or 32bit Color Pictures
on CompuServe or America On-Line. Concerning America On-Line
is there anybody from Hawaii who is accessing America On-Line
from here? It is true that there is an additional 60 cents
per minute surcharge that America On-Line tacks on to people
calling from Hawaii or Alaska? Is there a way to get around
this?
Now back to 24/32-bit images, I have visited PICS, CORNER,
and GALLERY on CompuServe, but I
have only found GIF files which to my knowledge only is an
8 bit format. Is CompuServe going to come out with a 32bit
version of the GIF format? I hope so and I also hope that
it incorporates the JPEG image compression algorithms.
I have just used CIS Manager to log onto CompuServe and
it really makes it easier to navigate and get-info&download
files from. Using this program almost makes me want to give
up GENIE or write them E-MAIL demanding a Mac version of
their navigation program "Alladin." I have a question concerning
CIS Manager. I was wondering after previewing a GIF file, is there
a way to save that picture onto disc? I would think so since the
contents of the picture has been sent to your computer already, but
maybe not. I was also wondering what download protocal is CIS Manager
and CompuServe Navigator using? I prefer Z-modem, but if Compu-Serve
Quick B Download Protocal is faster then I'll go with it, but I will
miss Z-modem Protocal's continue downloading where left off feature.
I also have a question concerning FTP commands. I was wondering
if there is a command that will print the contents of a text file
to screen when in FTP. For example, TYPE in MS-DOS. It would be a
handy command to use in FTP since there seems to always be a text file
describing what the other file is. It would be great to be able to read
the file without having to first download the file and then use McSink
to read the file and finally download the main file.

Please E-mail your replies to careyk@uhccux.UUCP

Thanks.

P.S. There are 32-Bit Color Pictures on GENIE in the Mac Libraries and
the Photo User Group's Libraries. GENIE also has a service where
you can send them a picture and they will digitize it for you in
32-Bit or 8-BIT color and either make it available only to you to
download or send you it on a disc. I still find GENIE to have the
fastest response and the best format to view a directory of files
that list filename, size, accesses, and a brief description of the
file and then provides a more detailed description of the file
in the downloading section. One of my major gripes about CompuServe
is that when viewing a listing of files that are available to download,
CompuServe only provides the name, size, and number of accesses.
To find out what the file is you have to leave the listing mode and
then go to the get-info mode. Before CIS manager came out, I used to
keep switching between these two modes which was cumbersome and which
took up time. CIS manager sort of solved this problem by allowing you
to be able to get information about a file while in the listing mode
by double-clicking on the file's icon. But double-clicking all the
time is beginning to get annoying. I noticed that each file library
on CompuServe has a summary of all the files in the library and which
is in the format I like which has the filename, size, and description.
But having to download or view that file before downloading is kind of
a rigamorole and also that summary isn't always up to date and also
you have to find it before you can view it. I was wondering whether
there is a way in CompuServe to be able to do a listing of files
in a format which includes the description of the file in CIS Manager
or in CompuServe Navigator. If there isn't a way, I guess I will
continue to use the double-clicking method in CIS Manager.

Also, is there any other benefits in using CompuServe Navigator over CIS
Manager other than saving time on-line? How does CompuServe Navigator
do this? Is it kind of a drag to have CompuServe Navigator always logging
on or off whenever your want to read other article or get info on another
file or does it force you to preplan your session before you do another
log-on? P.S. I love CIS manager's multiple file downloading feature. It
really takes the pain out of having to wait in front of the computer for
a file to download and then type in the name of the next file to download.
