[comp.sys.mac.comm] Courier HST vs v.32 modems for dialup appletalk

laver@siodo.UCSD.EDU (Mick Laver) (01/28/91)

I've been dialing in to our appletalk network via a Shiva NetSerial and
Courier dual standard (HST and v.32) modem. I've come in with both a
v.32 modem and a straight Courier HST (no v.32), and noticed MUCH
better (faster) performance with the v.32 for all network services.

In theory the HST at 14.4 Kbps should be considerably faster than the
v.32 at 9.6, but in operation it's barely faster than my 2400bps
connnected at MNP 5. Can anyone shed some light? I realize the Courier
is omptimized for HS transmission in one direction, but a tech support
guy at Courier assured me that, in my case, I should still get good
performance. Shiva tells me that many folks are using HSTs with
NetSerials.

Anyone ever run a similar comparison, or used an HST for network dialup
for that matter? Thanks.
