[comp.sys.mac.comm] Dumb question about EtherTalk!

cnolan@mee.tcd.ie (01/28/91)

This is probably FAQ 1, but anyway ...

We have Mac IIs on E/net, one of the Macs has a LaserWriter connected to the
printer port, there are also a couple of other Macs on the LocalTalk. How do
I get the Macs on EtherTalk to see the printer on the LocalTalk.

Do I need a FatstPath bridge?

Do I need Apple's Internet Router product?
Is the above a program that can run as a background task on one of the
machines?

Please forgive my ignorance but we're really PC people.

Conar, You can put the l/w on the localtalk with the other Mac's and a
Kinetics Fastpath bridge would allow the Macs on the ethernet as well as
the Mac's on the LocalTalk to share the l/w's.. For that matter you
would open a great number of doors by bridging the local to the ether.
This would allow to use a large number of products available for
improving workgroup productivity.

Thanks to the many e-mail replies to my query about bridging AT-ET. I
received many suggestions for bridge products.

My main problem was letting Macs on the ethernet talk to a laser-writer. As one
person pointed out the best solution would be for Apple to provide a E/net
interface on the LW.

All our Macs are/will be on ethernet thus a sophisticated bridge is not what we
really need as we only need to see the printer. An idea that has been
suggested was to use a product like PacerPrint which allows the Macs to use a
LaserWriter connected to a VAX. This also provides better print spooling and
more security. As an added benefit the Vaxes now have a postscript printer
available .

Has anybody any thoughts on this solution, or is anybody using PacerPrint?
