Help! Would some kind soul please assist me sort out some problems I'm having getting Eudora to work on our network? Background info: Network: 1 Mac II, several Mac SE/30's on a localtalk network with a Kinetics Fastpath gateway to our Ethernet. Server: Sparc 1+ server, running SunOS 4.1. (hostname = 'trc', domainname = 'research.tellabs.com', IP address = 130.0.0.7 (local network only)) I configured MacTCP as specified in the Q&A Stack distributed with version 1.1. When I try to send a queued message, I get the message: Error involving Domain Name system None of the known name servers are responding. And yes, I *did* set the preferences in Eudora, setting the SMTP server to be trc.research.tellabs.com. The gateway address I left as 0.0.0.0. Some questions I have are: what is POP3 (beyond the expansion of the acronym, I mean), and how do I determine if our machine supports POP3? It's a Sparc running SunOS4.1 and I can't find any reference to POP3 in any of the manuals. Also, although the ethernet domainname is research.tellabs.com, the Sendmail config file (for historical reasons) has the domain as trc.tellabs.com, is this a problem? Finally, our connection to the outside world is via uucp thru Notre Dame, we aren't on the Internet, does this mean Eudora won't work for us? Sorry for any ignorance and for the confused presentation, it reflects my current state of mind, I guess. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx! --jon (jon@trc.tellabs.com, j1whalen.handel.helios.nd.edu) P.S. I can't ask the local Unix guru. I *am* what passes for the local guru here :-(

Hmmm... After failing with Eudora, I thought I'd try to set-up and run NCSA Telnet (version 2.3). I got nowhere, connections just hang. This suggests to me that I haven't got MacTCP configured right. Does anyone have a clear set of instructions (for a simpleton) on configuring MacTCP? Thanx in advance. --jon (j1whalen@handel.helios.nd.edu)
