[net.railroad] Amtrak & Conrail

BJORK@SU-SCORE.ARPA (Steven Bjork) (04/20/85)

The current attempt by the administration to dump amtrak and conrail is
quite sad to me. This would put USA in the position of being the only
country in the world that does not operate a (nationalized) railroad.
There is historical precident for the keeping of the lines, during
WWI the gov. took over operation of all lines to clear up the state of
anarchy caused by lack of coordination among the armed services for
allocation of rail services. My suggestion is for the retention of
both amtrak and conrail, and use of conrail profits to subsidise the
passenger service. Unfortunately, the current administration would see
RED... It would be Pure Communism in it's eyes. I suppose that I'm
being as unrealistic as those that wish to revive steam... --Steve

I suppose you want us to follow the European lead and have a
nationalized car industry as well.

If I have my facts straight, ConRail is not now or soon won't be publicly
owned. The original intent was to keep it for a few years and then sell it
when it became profitable. I seem to remember hearing Chessie bought it.

BTW, I agree. The day we lose AmTrak will be a sad day indeed.
