[comp.sys.mac.comm] Hermes Batch Download

news@afit.af.mil (L. Maurice Riggins) (02/18/91)

I'm not a Hermes sysop, just call into them a bit and have noticed a
problem with the Zmodem Batch Download. It seems that every other file
is skipped, i.e. you put a.sit, b.sit, and c.sit in the batch and start
a download. a.sit comes through fine. Then Hermes says it is sending
b.sit, but the receiving telecomm program gets the real name from the
MacBinary header and receives c.sit. Then there's an error when Hermes
can't find a third file (or if there are more files, it says it's sending
the fourth and really sends the fifth, etc).

The weird thing about this is that it only occurs on a v.42 or MNP call
(into USR HST/v.42)! Disabling v.42/MNP fixes it!

I've experienced this problem with a Hayes ULTRA 9600, a ZOOM 2400/v.42,
and a Practical Peripherals PM9600SA, all tested with ZTerm 0.85,
White Knight 11.10, and Microphone II v3.01.

I thought perhaps it had something to do with the /ARQ the bbs modem puts
out in its CONNECT string. But the sysops I've talked to say this problem
doesn't occur with callers using HST/v.42's and their connects also have
/ARQ in the string (I haven't actually tested an HST). They don't have a
clue, but confirm the problem exists.

Any clues as to what's going on here? Is there a difference in the MNP and
v.42 implementation in the HST that could be causing the problem?

Anybody else seeing this? Anyone calling in with an HST seeing it?
Anyone making non-HST v.42/MNP connects NOT seeing it? I'm curious.

Thanks,
