[comp.sys.mac.comm] QUESTION: Remote access to AppleShare server?

rob@DARTH.CC.MCGILL.CA (Robert Macfarlane) (03/01/91)

Howdy.

I've just set up an Appleshare server in our office, and I'm
wondering if there are any PD remote access programs for AppleShare.

What we want to do is enable a single remote machine connected by modem
to transfer files to and from the AppleShare server. That's all.

I know this can be done by adding a Shiva Netmodem to the network, but
those things are expensive. Anyway, the phone system in our office
is a Northern Telecom Meridien SL-1, which won't work with regular modems.

The AppleShare server documentation mentions that it is possible to run
one application on the server concurrently with the server software.
So I'm looking for an application which will run concurrently with AppleSharem
with the ability to answer incoming calls and perform file transfers.

If anybody knows about such a thing, I'd be grateful for some info.

One more thing: our server is a Classic (no snickers please; we just use
it for text and DTP files). The Classic's software screen dimmer will not
turn the screen completely off, so I'm worried about tube burn in the long
run. Does anybody know if screen savers can be run safely with the AppleShare
server software?

Thanks a zillion,
Rob Macfarlane
