[comp.sys.mac.comm] IIx doesn't like the ethernet drivers...

mike@pyrite.SOM.CWRU.Edu (Michael Kerner) (03/05/91)

This may be a bit advanced and perhaps a bit specific for a question, but
here goes.

We've got a IIx that we're trying to put on thin Ethernet. We've done this
sort of thing with a bunch of Macs before, with no problemo. Pop in the
NuBus Ethernet card, pop on the T, install the drivers and walk away.

Well, this time things aren't that simple. The IIx doesn't hook in to the net.
I can't see printers or servers from it. I've checked the control panel to
make sure the driver is up (we're on mode 1), and appleTalk is active. I've
swapped cards, tried other machines at the node, and tried other drivers, so
I'm relatively sure its the machine...or is it that the IIcx needs a different
EtherNet driver? The tranceiver is onboard, and there are probably a few other
little details I've tried, but I'm so frustrated that I can't remember all of
them right now.

Any suggestions, please EMAIL to me...

Thanks,
Mikey.

IIx or IIcx? Well it doesn't much matter, I've got ~5 E-netted
"cx" s & ~4 E-netted "x" s and they all work.

Question:

Are you running Appletalk Phase 1 or Phase 2 on the network?
( if you installed the phase 2 driver - the one which usually
ships with E-net cards nowadays - and your network is phase
1 then you will experience the symptoms you are seeing now.
To fix the problem, drag the phase 1 driver from the installer
disk to the system folder of the Mac. You'll find the phase
1 driver on the EtherTalk Installer diskette in a folder
called "Previous Version". When you call up the control
panel, click on the Network icon, you will see 2 E-Talk drivers,
one will have single headed arrows ( phase 1 ) and the other
will have double headed arrows ( phase 2 ). Click on the
appropriate driver for your network and you should be in
     business. )
