[net.railroad] Cape Cod

Does anyone have any information on the Cape Cod Railway? I have to make a
trip to the area and thought I'd take the chance to ride it. I'm
specifically interested in schedule and information as to how to contact the
railroad.

Thanks Ed,

I've called the rr for information and will check my PTJ's.

Steam Pass Service Dir usually has info on Cape Cod. The 1982
edition I have at work has the following address;
          Cape Cod & Hyannis Railroad
          Box 57
          Hyannis, Mass 02601
          (617) 771-1145.

They did run tourist excursion service between Hyannis,
Sandwich, and one other town on the Cape.

There was an article last year about them extending service up
to the Boston Area. I believe the article was in Passenger
Train Journal. If you are interested I'll try to find it at the
library and send you more info.

From the June and July 1984 NARP NEWS editions I culled the following info:

Summer 1984 schedule not including seasonal service Buzzards Bay - Falmouth/
Hyannis:

I don't know the schedule but if you call the MBTA they might be able
to give you the timings. What I do know is that it leaves Braintree station
and travels over the bridge that crosses the canal and arrives in Hynanis
for a few hours. My friend took the train for the noon time ride, he
said that they serve lunch on the train and when it arrives in Hynanis they
let you walk around for a few hours. I will try to get more info for you
if you want.

Today's Boston Globe reports that the Cape Cod and Hyannis Railway starts
weekend service next weekend, will run daily in the summer. Track work has
allowed them to speed up schedules from Braintree, where there is a direct
transfer from the MBTA red line, to Hyannis, by half an hour.

I took the train down last summer; it was a gas. It's all 50 year old
equipment with windows that open, and there's lots of beer for sale.

I don't have details at hand,
but the general idea is that they start from Buzzards Bay (on the canal)
in the early morning and make a commuter run up to Braintree,
where commuters can connect with the Red Line ('subway') to get to work.
The train is then in place to take excursionists to the Cape faraday.
When the train returns to Braintree in the late afternoon,
it is then ready to take the commuters home again.
Unfortunately, home base is not down in Hyannis or Falmouth,
so commuting from on-Cape could be a hassle,
though I've known people to do the same routine
with a *bus* (ugh!) from the canal.

As for egg knishning, you *can* open the windows,
contrary to common practise on most trains today,
and the result is rather fun.
I suppose they'll put a stop to that as soon as some jerk falls out
or some other jerk throws a rock at the wealthy excursionists,
but for the nonce it's rather exhilarating.
