[comp.sys.mac.comm] VT220 Emulation

tmyers@oucsace.cs.OHIOU.EDU (Tim Myers) (03/08/91)

Our university is putting on line a new VAX and software that they
recommend VT 220 emulation for use. I've heard them recommend
MacTerminal for comm software, but also understand that VersaTerm
will emulate a VT 220 terminal.

I'd appreciate any recommendation on these two programs, or others
you are familiar with. Thanks.

I rate the available terminal emulators thus:

1 - MacKnowledge - Excellent scripting, and good VT100 emulation
2 - Versaterm Pro - poor scripting, good vt220 emulation, and tek4105 graphics
3 - Microphone - reasonable scripting, fair emulation high $
4 - Zterm - passable
5 - White Knight - yuck!

Unless you need Tek pan/zoom etc get regular VersaTerm (i.e. not
PRO) much cheaper, everything else is identical.

Other have mentioned the other programs that I would have so instead of being
redundant I will mention another they didn't (ours).

You might also like to look into TCP/Connect II VT version which contains a
VT220 and VT240 eumlation over the network. We give universities discounts on
the price, so make sure that you mention that you are an educational
institution.

Also, we over a package called the InterCon Telnet Driver/Tool. Which is a
package of network untilities that allow MicroPhone II and any program that
uses the ComToolBox access to TCP/IP networks.

We have a vaxcluster running VMS. I have tried the most recent version of
MacTerminal (toolbox based) and didn't like it at all. I haven't tried VT220
emulation in Versaterm, but have used 4.0 (not toolbox version) with VT100
emulation and also White Knight. I prefer Versaterm and would recommend it.

If you want something free and can live with VT100/102 emulation only, then
MacKermit is a possibility. It's functionality is severely limited (e.g., you
can't copy to clipboard; no scripting or even autodial from a list of phone
numbers), but it at least allows you to define key macros so you could define
appropriate keys for special keys in the vax environment. I doubt it will
handle special screen text attributes, however, if the vax software exploits
that. It is available on sumex-aim and lots of other places.
