[comp.sys.mac.comm] 2 questions: Mac Telnet to a port # and Mac news reader stacks

rgoldstone@OAVAX.CSUCHICO.EDU (Robin Goldstone) (04/05/91)

I have been trying to get one of the Mac Hypercard news reader stacks to
work. I have tried one called Mews 1.4 and one called Netnews Reader 1-2-1.
I have MacTCP installed and operational on my Mac. I have been using it
with NCSA Telnet and VersaTerm for months. Both of the news reader stacks
fail when trying to connect to the NNTP server. I get a message to the
effect "server not responding". Does this sound familiar to anyone?

In order to troubleshoot this problem, I was hoping to use a Mac Telnet client
(either NCSA Telnet or Mac IP) to Telnet to the NNTP port on the NNTP server
to verify if I can get in that way. I don't see a mechanism for specifying
a TCP port # on either of these Telnet clients. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

In NCSA Telnet, just add a space and a port number to the hostname in the
"open session" dialog.
