[net.railroad] sanders

Steel-on-steel isn't the only combinatiuon that makes use of sand.
All of the buses in Pittsburgh are either ordered with sanders, or
have them installed after they arrive. The older GMC buses have
these as retrofits, and I think the new Neoplan coaches, too. The AM
General, newer GMC, and MAN buses have sanders built-in (as I recall).

On our local PCC streetcars, the sand pipes used to freeze up in the
winter. I remember once when I was in high school, having to get out
of my seat so the motorman could scoop some sand from the top of sand
box (under the seat) to take outside and spread on the rails.
