Perhaps President Eisenhower had a high speed rail line between Philly and Pittsburgh in the back of his mind when he proposed "Atoms for Peace" and "Operation Ploughshare"... :-) On another track, has the catenary RR proposed years ago in the Scientific American ever gotten anywhere? (Recall it consisted of an evacuated tunnel and a catenary drop using gravity for most propulsion.) Now that there are continuous tunnel-making machines available perhaps long tunnels (an interstate SUBWAY system) would be practical, particularly if the DoD could be convinced of its need for national defense... (Don't laugh, they're up to far less practical things already.) Nick
