[comp.sys.mac.comm] High-speed data/fax modems?

vbob@umd5.umd.edu (Bob Shields) (04/29/91)

With the price of V.32/V.32bis/V.42/V.42bis modems dropping into my budget
range, and fax capabilities added as well, I'm looking to purchase one
for home. Although the fax portion won't be used that often, for the
small increase in price over non-fax modems its seems worth it. Does
anyone have any experience with either of the following two fax/data modems?

Prometheus ProModem 9600M Plus and Ultima: although these two modems received
kudos from MacUser, they haven't printed a detailed review or comparison to
other modems. Reviews of their 2400 baud fax modem gave it poor grades
except for its ability to fax grey-scale images (which it did well) and the
comm software included (which I don't require.) On the other hand, I have
had a ProModem 2400 (upgraded from 1200 baud) for many years and have been
very happy with it.

Digicom Systems 9624LE+: a version of this modem received good reviews from
PC Week (Nov. 19, 1990), and was mentioned (though not "reviewed") in MacWeek.
Since then the V.32bis and fax capability was added. Although their ads say
there is a Mac version of their fax software, I haven't seen them
advertise in the Mac mags, and I feel a bit uncomfortable about their
expertise in the Mac arena.

Since I probably won't use the fax capability that often, I guess I should
concentrate on the data transfer capability. I'm hoping that this will be
the last modem I ever buy since ISDN should be here before long... :^)

If you have any comments, e-mail to me and I'll summarize to the net.
