Hi there, I have a question for all of you communications gurus out there. In our office, we have several 386SX computers, and Macs (all of the luggable variety). I was wondering what would be the easiest way to allow them all to share the same Postscript Printer. This printer has a Parallel Port, a Serial Port, and an Appletalk port. It does not allow the simultaneous input of data from all ports at the same time, like some printers do, so we have to always go to the printer and switch it between Appletalk for the Macs, and Parallel for the IBMs. There must be an easier way to somehow get all the Macs and IBMs talking to each other, so that we need only use just one of the ports on the printer. Any solutions out there? BTW file sharing would be a plus, but is not essential in solving the problem......is there such a thing as a external smart switch for printers that will allow input from both AppleTalk and Parallel sources at the same time? Thanks in advance...... Sharing a Postscript printer between Macs and IBMs can be done by buying localtalk cards for the IBMs and running AppleShare PC on them. This will all of the machines to access all the devices on an appletalk network. I have set up a system like this and it works quite well. The IBMs can access Apple Share file servers as well. Some IBM software will run off the server although much will not. There are glitches with this system. However, once you are familiar with its little quirks it works great. If you want more info, or need help with some quirks feel free to drop me a line. -Scott

One other thing I think I should point out in my problem......we run Windows 3.0 on ALL of of our IBMs...I had heard that there is a problem with the LocalTalk/PC Appleshare enviroment, when running under Windows. Is this true? >LocalTalk/PC Appleshare enviroment, when running under Windows. Is this true? Check out the Bridgeport instead. It's a one-shot $500 expense, versus $300 per PC. AppleShare PC from Apple is now PhoneNET Talk from Farallon. Our product, version 2.0.2, supports working with Windows 3.x. We have made several bug fixes to the printing portion of the Network Client Software which address printing to Apple Print Servers, Epson Emulation, and Large documents. Farallon is also currently under development of a new enhanced version which adds API to Windows for accessing PhoneNET Talk. Hope this helps.
