[comp.sys.mac.comm] In theory, could Teleport modems do V42bis?

I really have two questions, both pertaining to Global Village
Teleport modems:

(1) These modems presently run MNP5. Could they, in theory, do V42bis
compression with only a change to the CDEV? That is, is the data
compression done in the hardware or by the CDEV?

(2) Does Global Village have any plans to implement V42bis?

When I set out to buy some Mac modems in January I called and asked about
V.42bis. The response was "no plans". I thank 'em for the straight answer,
and bought Multitech's instead.
