[comp.sys.mac.comm] NFS Connectivity

iceman@sequent.com (Ian Evans) (05/25/91)

The following is an excerpt from a paper I wrote for our company.
Basically if you want direct ethernet-only file AND print redirection,
you have to rely on the public domain for now. The two commercial
products I have looked at thus far are good. Although neither offers
printing from macs to unix YET, they both plan to this year. Intercon
currently plans to release a separate product (may be separate) this
summer, July or so. Wollonging is scheduled for Q491 or Q192.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

We are looking into ethernet-based solutions to provide faster file and
print redirection. There are two commercial products available that
provide mounting of filesystems on the mac desktop. Testing of one
product showed improvements in file transfers. Transferring a 120k file
took 5 to 10 seconds. These times were very consistent during various
network and system loads. Neither product provides print redirection
from the mac to unix printers. They are planning on releasing updates
anywhere from late Q291 to early Q192 that will provide printing from
macs to unix printers.

The ethernet-based products are:

		MacNFS
		The Wollongong Group
		415-962-7140
		Support@twg.com

		NFS/Share
		InterCon Systems
		703-709-9890

We have tested the Wollongong product so far.

The gatorbox does provide printer sharing from unix to mac printers via
a product called gatorprint. Gatorprint will allow unix machines to
print to printers on an AppleTalk network. We did not pursue this
option because we felt it to be a more kludgy solution than macs
printing to unix printers.
